Barnegat is largely a residential town, but it has an interesting diversity of shopping experiences. For instance, the historic district, located around the intersection of Route 9 and Bay Avenue, is home to The "Gold Duster", an art gallery dedicated to regional artists and artisans; a tobacco shop; and several antique shops. This picturesque part of town was once the main shopping area of Barnegat. "Barnegat Pete", an orphaned deer adopted by a Barnegat family and loved by the locals, frequented the local shops for handouts between 1935 and 1945!

Along Route 9, between Lacey Township to the north and Stafford Township to the south, are a number of interesting businesses - it's worth the time to stop at one of the many interesting shops along the roadway, such as "Unshredded Nostalgia" or "Recycling the Past." In the northern section, an "A&P" grocery store, pharmacies, laundries, pet stores, eateries and more are located in a few small malls.

West Bay Avenue just east of the Garden State Parkway (exit 67) is the hub of many stores: Genauardi's Grocery Store, a liquor store, dry cleaners, pharmacies, hair salons, and others are located within several mini-malls.
