Barnegat is located between the Barnegat Bay and the NJ Pine Barrens, so there are plenty of outdoor activities for even the most adventurous spirits!
For a relaxing walk, bike ride, or an invigorating jog under the pines, visit the Barnegat Branch Trail. It runs parallel to Route 9 for 3.1 miles from Barnegat to the Waretown-Lacey border, and will eventually stretch Toms River, a total of 15.6 miles. Its logo was designed to honor the Central Railroad of NJ, for which the trail was named, since much of it is on or adjacent to the old train tracks.
About a mile west of the Garden State Parkway on West Bay Avenue is Cloverdale Farm County Park. The 80 acres were purchased by Ocean County from its owner, who had operated the farm for many years as a working cranberry farm. She wanted the land preserved so turned down developer offers and accepted the offer of the County. It is open seven days a week until sunset. You can stroll among the old cranberry bogs, birdwatch or just enjoy the sounds of silence here at this bit of preserved history.

Barnegat is proud to host six hundred acres of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. A boardwalk to a viewing deck is located off Bayshore Drive between Ridgeway and Edison Avenues. Here, you can glimpse migratory water birds feeding and resting in the impoundment.
Of course, the kids are an important part of Barnegat, and they're sure to love the Skateboard and Bike Park on Bayshore Drive! It has a variety of ramps, pyramids and other challenges. (Of course, proper safety attire is required.) The Township also runs a number of playgrounds and/or basketball courts at the following locations:
Bowline Drive at Bilge, Settler's Landing
Village Drive, Settler's Landing
Beverly Drive, Pebble Beach
Georgetown Boulevard,
First Street, Windward
Lower Shore Road, Historic District
Bengal Boulevard/Project Playground, Rose Hill
For more information on Barnegat's playgrounds, call the Barnegat Recreation Department at 609-698-0800, ext. 122.

Of course, the Barnegat Bay offers lots of fun in the sun! A bathing beach located on Bayshore Drive offers clean and calm saltwater, and is staffed with lifeguards. The beach is located on Bayshore Drive, and offers a grand view of Barnegat Lighthouse, locally known as "Ol Barney," any time of year!
Barnegat provides easy access to the NJ Pine Barrens; in fact, it lies within NJ Pine Barrens just west of the Garden State Parkway! The entire Township is within the Pinelands National Reserve, a million-plus acre ecological gem. A short drive into the Pine Barrens will bring you to great river canoeing and kayaking locations, as well as a number of campgrounds, ranging from wilderness to semi-luxurious. Eco-kayaking is also available at liveries along the Barnegat Bay.
Just north of Barnegat in Waretown (Ocean Township) is 900 acre Wells Mills County Park, where you'll find miles of hiking trails, a 34-acre lake with canoe rentals, and a three-story nature center. Wells Mills County Park is also home to the "Pine Barrens Jamboree" held annually in October.
Also in Waretown is the Lighthouse Center for Natural Resource Education, part of the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife. Here, you'll find a variety of opportunities to explore a maritime forest, salt marsh, two tidal streams and a freshwater impoundment, all close to the Barnegat Bay.
