Barnegat Township is located in southern Ocean County NJ. It stretches from the coast westward to Burlington County, and is bordered by Ocean Township (Waretown) to the north, Lacey Township to the northwest, Woodland Township (Burlington County) to the west, Stafford Township to the south and Barnegat Bay and Long Beach Island to the east. It covers about 35 square miles. It's about 60 miles east of Philadelphia and 90 miles south of New York City. Route 9 runs north-south through Barnegat, as does the Garden State Parkway. Barnegat has a full interchange at exit 67, which exits to West Bay Avenue. West Bay runs east-west from the Barnegat Bay to Route 72 .

From Philadelphia and points west, Barnegat Township can be reached via Route 70 East to Route 72 East, then left on County Route 554 (West Bay Avenue), or the Atlantic City Expressway to .

From North and South Jersey, Barnegat is most easily reached via the Garden State Parkway exit 67.
